Fall for New England in October
Ever wanted to visit New England? If you are one who has never been to New England than I am here to give you some key pointers and tip coming as I grew up in Connecticut.
Despite not having lived in CT for over 15 years I visit family often and can appreciate what was once my home.
Home on the other hand is what you make of it. Home is where you set down roots even if you choose to move a few times in your life or a life change happens, so just remember that.
Just having visited New England to celebrate my mother’s birthday I went off to some areas I had not been since I was in college. What a treat that was, especially going to a part of Connecticut that I had never explored.
I had gone to Mystic, Connecticut 15 years ago and had only visited the main tourist attractions to include but not limited to Mystic seaport and the mystic aquarium. Now if you’re anything like me you love gallivanting around some cool places. For the first time I discovered the downtown Main Street area where one can do all things water sports in summer or early fall, before the weather gets too cold.
I love a good spot for paddleboarding, so I discovered Mystic has a great drop in spot to paddleboard right near where the main road meets the draw bridge. If you enjoy any water sports I highly recommend stopping by a local staple for homemade ice cream known as the drawbridge ice cream company where they have been producing homemade ice cream for over 100 years.
After grabbing an ice cream take a stroll around the many local shops and then even grab dinner at a great spot with local grass fed burgers or even another great dish, called Engine company. Their food was good and being able to see a drawbridge in action was quite cool too. Seeing as there was limited time there I look forward to going back another visit to CT.
Along with CT there are many other New England states, but I had not visited Maine since my college days which was a long long time ago. I had the craving to visit Maine and have some seafood and a little jaunt around places that I hadn’t been to in a while.

I did exactly that and being there during a time that is a bit more off season was very gratifying. I went to Kittery, Maine which has lots of shopping options if you are looking for some gifts or outlets. From Kittery, Maine head on up the coast to Ogunquit. This was a place I had always heard about as my parents have gone there for many years as that has been their spot to celebrate their anniversary.
As it was a bit drizzly and colder I still did the daring thing by tipping my toes in the water at one of the local beaches, so I highly recommend this too. After a few minutes it may have been a bit cold, but it actually felt refreshing, especially now residing in a land locked state without any sort of beach, yet thankful for lakes. Sometimes you need to take the road less traveled and dip your toes in the sand.
We ended up going to a fantastic locally owned italian restaurant by the name of Angelina and the food was made fresh and truly delightful on a foggy and rainy New England evening.
If you ever go in fall also make sure to go around Halloween time as the town decorates their buildings and local lawns with various adornments and it is truly a sight to see. Now just hoping we win the two night stay at the local beach side hotel that was having a contest to guess how much four real heavy pumpkins weigh. All in all New England is a must visit especially if you can go off season with lesser crowds.
